What's amazing is that when questioned about "What can the parents do?" the blogger, who was anoyomous and now suddenly wants to sell some books, had no concrete answers. As a School Food Service Manager I am appalled that the media promos these segments only to tell one side and doesn't find out if this is in all schools, in all states.
In Pennsylvania we have mandated strict guidelines that help promote healthy eating and wellness or we don't get our government funding. Why didn't "The View" have some one from The School Nutrition Association who could help explain and tell what most school districts are now doing to help. Everyone wants to point their finger at school lunches because we are an easy target. Drive by any drive through, Dairy Queen and Pizza Place and the lines are out the window. The kids don't want our healthier lunches we serve since they don't get the healthy stuff at home. Whooppi, if your so outraged, donate some money to these school districts so they can train, staff, and add healthier options to their menus. School budgets are slashed these days which means food service budgets are hurting too.
As for the blogger, do something positive like educate the children on choosing the healthy options. School food service is a business. If the kids won't buy it or take it, we have to serve them what they will buy. Parents, feed your kids a salad and something not processed once in awhile and maybe your kids will start taking healthier options that may be offered at school.
One other note, with school budgets hurting, many school districts are opting to contact out their food service to big companies like ARA. This means many times school lunches are made at one central location and shipped throughout the district. Packaged food probably works better for this situation.
I won't buy her book and put money in her pocket.
