Guests: Al Gore, Joel Osteen
November 04, 2009 | Posted at 12:03 PM

The View kicked off with a great giveaway from McCormick & Schmick's Seafood Restaurants. Since the restaurant soon hosts its 11th annual Veterans Appreciation event providing complimentary entrees to veterans across the country, McCormick & Schmick's sent everyone in our audience home with a $100 gift card!

Former Vice President Al Gore stopped by today to talk about Our Choice, the sequel to his exposé on global warming (a book that became the Oscar award-winning movie An Inconvenient Truth).  He also just helped free two American journalists from a North Korean prison. He spoke to our audience about what needs to be done to solve this environmental crisis. To hear more from Vice President Gore, pick up a copy of Our Choice; everyone in our audience took home a copy.

Later, pastor Joel Osteen joined to talk about his new book It's Your Time.  Joel preaches every week to crowds bigger than you might see at aconcert.  He also told us about the success he's had in his church, and how last year him and his wife preached at Yankee Stadium to nearly 47,000 attendees.  Check out Joel's new book -- everyone also took one home.

I imagine it's easy for Mr. Osteen to encourage people, especially during these hard times, to be positive when one is as wealthy as he is. It was reported that he was poised to earn $13 million for his second book; Become A Better You. I would not be surprised to learn that he has earned more, if not equal to 13 million, for the book he is currently promoting. I was blown over when I learned that his Lakewood church runs on a staggering $70 million budget. A church!?! These are facts reported in an interview he did with Forbes in June of this year. That should be some sort of a red flag of something not being quite right: A pastor doing an interview with Forbes about, amongst other subjects, his wealth. I very much wish the interview this morning had gone on longer, partuclarly the subject about homosexuality because clearly Mr. Osteen was caught off guard and stumbled through his answers without really giving a definitive one. Kudos kudos kudows to Whoppi and Joy for pressing this guy about the issue, and no kudos to Sheri, Barbara, and Elisabeth, particularly Elisabeth, if she indeed came to his resuce by abruptly ending the interview when he appeared to be flummoxed by the direction the interview went. I can hardly wait for Carrie Prejean's appearance and hope with all my might that Whoppi and Joy question her as well about her view of homosexuality and same-sex marriage.

My comment is for whoopie. She needs to know more of the facts about the swine flu.A young girl in my area passed away from the flu and never had a high fever. That is what is so dangerous about this flu.You can be a little sick and start getting better then get hit with a bacterial infection that cannot be controlled with antibiotics. This is why healthy kids can suddenly die!!!!!!This is avery serious matter and you should know that being on tv people who might not know the facts are going to take your words as true. You can have 2 symptoms or all symptoms and still have the swine flu all symptoms should be looked into. Now there I have said my peace.

I was pleasantly surprised that Joel Osteen actually had a definite answer to the question of homosexuality. I've always thought him a bubble gum preacher. He usually talks a lot of sweetness and light, but won't tackle the tough issues. Kudos, Joel! Elizabeth, you dropped the ball again.
