Guests: President Barack Obama
July 29, 2010 | Posted at 9:26 AM

American history was made today with a very special edition of The View! President Barack Obama is the first sitting President to ever visit a daytime talk show and Barbara Walters made a special appearance for this historic event.

President Obama spoke about the tough criticism he has received these last few weeks -- and why he decided to come and visit our show! He then switched gears and addressed several topics: why he does not call himself bi-racial, the money that has been spent to stimulate the economy, and Congress’s vote to spend another 59 billion dollars on the war in Afghanistan. The President also answered for viewers what he wants his legacy to be.

After tackling all the tough questions, the co-hosts thought they would play a pop-culture lighting round quiz; they asked the President questions about Lindsay Lohan, Mel Gibson, Jersey Shore's Snooki (the President doesn't know who she is!), and even the top five songs on his iPod (everything from Maria Callas to Frank Sinatra -- but no Justin Bieber).

Miss the episode? You can watch it here.

Just as I thought...the show was just a dance around the issues segment!
I'm really surprised that with all the opinions the hosts have not one of them addressed the issue of the milions of unemployed Americans! Shame on you! I guess ratings are all you really give a damn about including Barbara Walters! Who cares what music he listens to, if he knows who Lindsay Lohan is, if he thinks Mel Gibson should get anger management and especially who the hell Snooki is!!!!
You had an extra ordinary chance to be a real news program and help your fellow Americans!
As of now I will NEVER watch this joke of a show again!

President Obama answered Elizabeth’s questions with facts she needed to hear. She is so close minded that she doesn’t listen.

But the thing I found appalling, was her rude challenge and interruption on unemployment to the President of the United States. She did not sound bipartisan when she asked him about jobs and nothing he could say would keep her from trying to discredit him. This after saying that the President should be treated with respect even if you disagree with him (when talking about Bush, evidently this doesn't apply to Obama).

She just tries to make herself sound like she is the authority on issues. She should not have been on the show today. To talk down to him the way she did was inexcusable.

Her shrill voice and bad manners and know it all attitude belong on Fox news not ABC.

I wonder if anyone else noticed this and if will be mentioned on ET, Extra, etc. so she will be called out on her behavior and then get all teary and apologize like she did with Erin on DWTS.

...somehow I doubt it.

And big kudos to you Joy for mentioning the President not having enough attack dogs. I don't always agree with you and Whoopi or Sherri, but love how y'all cut through the BS.

I usually just dismiss EH's antics, but today she was just WRONG -- rude and wrong.

Oh my gosh!!!! Doesn't Obama have so many more pressing things to do? He definetly has some priority mixups! Oh, his wife does watch the show....
I feel very dishartened about the entire Obama Presidency. What ever happend to Peace Hope and Change? So far nothing except making the Nobel Peace Prize mean nothing to future receipients and an oil spill that got out of hand for an unexcusable number of days on his watch and a healthcare plan that the public doesn't want. Oh, and don't forget the money he keeps spending, and spending and spending.

Gosh! What a bunch of negative people! Just like Elisabeth! This was not The State of the Union; the President consented to appear on this program to talk to us via the 5 ladies of The View.
I think President Obama did an excellent job answering political and personal questions, plus the "fluff." Although the president and his wife are clearly highly intelligent people, they also have the courtesy not to "get down to" ignorant people's levels. As "LuvTheView2" said, President Obama answered Elisabeth's question but she is so closed minded (and that's the milder adjective) that she didn't even understand. He had to explain it her again! I still don't think she heard. I enjoyed that he said "if it was your job that was saved, you'd think it's important"
A person like her who gets paid to voice her ignorance should be glad she has a job! Please!
Plus, how dare she speak to the United States President in that tone and manner!
Anyhow, thank you, The View, for asking President Obama; and thank you, Mr. President, for accepting the appearance. That shows us that you are a regular person - unlike that last dumb-dumb who was in that office.

What each individual thinks about the show is all in their own expectations! What does one think could actually be accomplished in an hour long tv show. I feel he answered all the questions presented to him today! This man, OUR President, is NOT God, he's a human being who is susceptible and vulnerable to error. The economy, the war, and a whole lot of other issues where going on before he came into office, and he should not be expected to fix them over night! He's had a long time to think about his race (being bi-racial) and it really should not be a factor in every aspect of his life, he's an American like each and every one of us. Being black or bi-racial does not have the same meaning to everyone in that racial group, so we cannot judge how one sees himself. My race is not a problem for me, so why should I think about it before making a career move, I say let the people who are concerned about it think about it! Unless you're in his administration, would you know about whats pressing, everyone needs time for pleasure, time to do the things they think are important, even if it's to please a certain group or a certain person.

He did address the issue of unemployment! His answer was helping out the small businesses because they are the ones that are generating more jobs, and expected to build the economy up. It was short, but what did we expect! I think the hosts did a great job about not making it a bashing session on the President.

He is an intelligent, witty, charismatic, and beautiful soul....Hats off to the President Of the United States Of America......Barack Obama!!!
