This Year's Hottest Food Trends

February 16, 2011 | Posted at 10:17 AM

There is a hot new harvest of food trends hitting a supermarket near you in 2011. Supermarket guru Phil Lempert joined to point your shopping cart in the right direction. Here are a few things he mentioned:

Orville Redenbacher’s Pop Up Bowl; orville.com
Orville Redenbacher’s Gourmet Popping Corn introduces the Pop Up Bowl™, a new microwave popcorn bag that transforms into a wide-brimmed, flat-bottom bowl that allows for easier snacking, sharing and clean-up, all while delivering the same delicious popcorn flavor that fans know and love. The Pop Up Bowl will be available nationwide at the end of March at grocery and mass retailers. The Pop Up Bowl is available in five flavors: Butter, Movie Theater Butter, SmartPop Butter, Kettle Korn and Ultimate Butter. Orville Redenbacher's Gourmet Popping Corn is a good source of fiber and is made with 100% whole grains. Retail price is $2.99 for a package of three.

Three Bells Fresh Pomegranate Arils; youngstownd.com
If you want to know what pomegranates really taste like forget the juices that add water and sugars and go right for the arils. These are nothing more than washed and ready to eat pomegranate seeds that are simply delicious. Nothing is added. Half of this container is just 70 calories and 12 grams of sugar that is naturally occurring from the fruit. These are the kind of food products that we should be snacking on and giving our kids. The slight crunch makes it fun to eat, but it is the taste that will keep you coming back for more. I would like to see them in a re-sealable container. Retails for $4.49 for 5.3oz.

Earth Chips Chocolate Kale Flavor; earthchips.net
Earth Chips’ special blend of kale, chocolate, and chia seeds is surprisingly rich and tasty, and has plenty of vitamins A, C, K, and heart-healthy omega-3 and -6 fatty acids. Earth Chips Chocolate Kale chips are dipped in our special blend of delicious organic cacao chocolate, vanilla, and low-glycemic coconut sugar, and then low-temperature dehydrated, so the high nutritional value of kale isn’t baked away. Blue Mountain Organics is a certified organic by Stellar Certification Services, certified kosher by Earth Kosher, and is a dairy-free, soy-free, peanut-free, and a non-GMO (genetically modified organisms) facility. Retails for $7.50 for 3oz.

Alexia Onion Rings; alexiafoods.com
Alexia’s all-natural appetizers combine premium chef-inspired ingredients and spices to create the perfect menu that is both simple to make and delicious to eat. Alexia Panko Breaded Onion Rings are crispy golden onions with light Japanese Panko breading seasoned with sea salt. Suggested retail price of $3.49.

New York Joe’s Onions; nyjoesonions.com
Growing up in New Jersey there is nothing better than spicy cooked red onions on a hot dog. New York Joe’s onions are fabulous. Just onions, tomato puree, olive oil, salt and red and cayenne pepper produce a flavorful sweet sensation! I am not going to limit these to hotdogs – this will be great on burgers, fish, tofu, in omelets, even cooked vegetables. Retails for 5.99 for 12oz.

Tonnino Tuna; tonnino.com
Tonnino Tuna is a new, gourmet tuna brand that is healthy, environmentally- friendly, and delicious! Sourced from Costa Rica, Tonnino packages the finest cuts of gourmet yellowfin tuna to create a product of exceptional appearance, texture and taste that is ready to eat straight from the jar. Tonnino tuna comes in traditional olive oil or spring water, as well as a variety of exciting and innovative flavors, including Oregano, Garlic, and Jalapeño. Use it in an entrée, salad, appetizer, or just eat it alone with crackers or pita bread – it’s a truly a versatile product. The prices range from $6.99 to $8.99, depending on flavor.

Tandoor Chef Cilantro Pesto Naan Pizza; tandoorchef.com
Tandoor Chef, the leading manufacturer of restaurant quality, all natural Indian cuisine, introduced an authentic Naan Pizza to its popular line of all natural frozen Indian products. The Original Naan Pizza is the first of its kind and will offer an innovative option for consumers nationwide. The Original Naan Pizza will be available in four gourmet varieties including Cilantro Pesto, Margherita, Roasted Eggplant and Spinach & Paneer Cheese. Tandoor Chef’s new product meets the growing demand for ethnic inspired pizza flavorings. Indian Cuisine is also the fastest growing ethnic food category in the U.S. The Cilantro Pesto Naan Pizza is a hand-stretched, all-natural artisan crust covered with a rich pesto sauce and topped with fresh mozzarella cheese, cilantro and tomatoes and fired in a Tandoor oven. SRP is $2.99.

MarDona Truffle Olive Oil Spray; mardonaspecialtyfoods.com
A 4 oz White Truffle infused pure imported Italian olive oil in a spray. Each full spray has 2.5 calories. The truffle essence is from Tartuflanghe in Piedmonte (Alba) Italy. The size and style was meant to be easily carried in a purse or brief case so it can be enjoyed wherever you go. Great to use on popcorn too! Retail price is $12.99.
