This Week's Best Comment: 1/30-2/3

February 03, 2012 | Posted at 3:24 PM

This week, Mitt Romney stirred up a debate with his comments that he's more concerned about the waning middle class than he is about aiding the very poor (or very rich). The co-hosts had a pretty heated debate about his comments, and on our forums, the discussion raged on. This week's winner is "DAVILA869-9", from the forum thread Romney: "I'm not concerned about the very poor":

"I think his comments are insensitive, but still pretty true. I don't know how to word this correctly, but let me try: there are some who will never get ahead, because they simply lack ambition/desire/initiative, no matter how many hands up are offered, or how many dollars are thrown at them. I feel like there are programs out there that are beneficial to those who want to get ahead.

I saw so many success stories (and many failures, as well) when I worked with an agency that used federal and state dollars to assist the chronically unemployed with job training, summer youth employment training programs, welfare-to-work programs, and repeat offender training programs. I saw those who worked hard to achieve and those who simply phoned it in and put no real effort into it. I know some of these programs must have been cut/changed over the years, but there are still things in place to help those who have the desire to be successful."

A balanced, thoughtful, yet still arguably controversial side to the issue. Do you agree with DAVILA869-9?

No, not at all. There are plenty out there who ARE working for peanuts. They get no medical. Some have to even use their own car and insurance. The list goes on. They are working these jobs because they have tried and failed to get better jobs. How do we reward them for taking anything and not relying on the government? We make them pay taxes and more taxes. You cannot lump the poor into one category and although I agree with DAVILA869-9 on many levels (too many able-bodied getting Disability for instance), I think that when you make a statement like Mitt made, you are not educated on what constitutes "the poor". I am one of those hard working people who has done everything and beyond to hold down a job so I am offended when I see people taking advantage of the system. However, I do not ever lose sight of the struggle "working" poor. They have NO safety net and yet the Right wants to raise their taxes and lower taxes on the Rich. Really?

When the media only says, shows or publishes ONE sentence, totally out of context, it is NO accident and is intended to put the speaker into the worst possible light.

I fell that the rich should pay more taxes than the poor or the middle class, why should we pay more. That is why the poor is still poor and the middle class is still stuck. I work everyday, I have an education, but because my employer who works for a foutune 500 company do not give out deserving raises, I will always be were I am at. I do not ask for a hand out, but fair and equal treatment.

I watched the View this morning and try so hard to watch the show but.ELIZABETH just ruins it for me. She thinks she knows everything. I wish Joy or Barbara would speak up and tell her to SHUT UP. I still cannot believe that Barbara puts up with her insults to everybody. I have always loved Barbara Walters but really upset that she puts up with ELIZABETH.Please get rid of Elizabeth....
