President Obama: "Don't Bet Against American Workers"
September 06, 2010 | Posted at 9:53 AM
President Barack Obama made a strong case for American economic recovery on Thursday, and he made that case on The View. Touting increases in private sector jobs, restructuring and recovery in the auto industry, and saving thousands of jobs that could have been lost, President Obama said -- with an eye towards the future -- "Don't bet against American workers. And don't bet against American ingenuity."
The View made history on Thursday as the first daytime talk show to welcome a sitting President to its studio. And the co-hosts made the most of it, including Barbara Walters -- who made an early return to the show after her heart surgery. (Barbara will return full-time in September.) "I was trying to find a show that Michelle actually watched," the President said as he sat down with the ladies. (Click here to see the video clip of that moment.)
In talking about the economy, co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck challenged President Obama on his claims of "saving" jobs, calling it "boasting" -- and that it obscures the fact that unemployment had reached double digits. Obama responded by saying we've gained private sector jobs for five consecutive months, and that citing saved jobs "makes a difference if your job was the one that was saved."
The conversation wasn't only about the economy, though. Barbara inquired about Afghanistan -- to which Obama stressed the importance of stabilizing Afghanistan to fighting terrorism in the Middle East -- and Sherri asked about the Shirley Sherrod controversy. The President cited a controversy-happy 24/7 media culture for blowing the Sherrod situation out of proportion, though he admitted his administration overreacted as well. Whoopi asked about the state of race relations in America. "What are we?" she asked. "We are Americans," he responded.
The co-hosts also got into some lighter topics with the President. Joy gave him a short pop-culture quiz, where we found out that he doesn't know who Jersey Shore's Snooki is, but he does know that Lindsay Lohan is in jail. (Click here for the video of that moment.)
He was also asked about the upcoming Chelsea Clinton wedding. Was he invited? "Hillary and Bill properly want to keep this for Chelsea," Obama answered, citing the increased security concerns and attention. "You don't want two presidents at a wedding."
So how does Obama view his first year and a half as President? "It's as challenging and satisfying as anything in my life," he said. What does he think his legacy will be? Check out this video clip and see.

July 29th, 2010, 11:07 amI never, never write to anyone on television but I feel I must pat JOY on the back for a simple statement (question) she asked President Obama on today’s View. First of all…..THANK YOU!
She asked the President where HIS side was in speaking out FOR him and his agenda/side. This past July my husband and I drove from NY to Arizona on a trip to see about a retirement move to the Cottonwood area (don’t ask about THEIR politics). While driving 6200 miles out and back we only had some CD’s and only the AM/FM radio at our disposal. OMG! I now know why Middle America and most other places think the way they do.
Every town and county and state has ONLY the pumped up talk radio side to listen to. There are NO stations that carry ANY type of programming for the other side. Although I am a registered Democrat I must say I do not always vote party line. I vote with whom I feel can get the best possible job done for the most Americans. That being said, THERE IS NO ONE out there giving ANY decent information that give the Americans the ability not only let alone desire to make an informed opinion on the direction this country should go but to think for themselves. All the talk radio folks do is YELL incessantly about that day’s news on racism etc. I say TALK not yell. Present information do not force.
I do have to say that although I think he is somewhat misguided, Fred Thompson has a good show and he TALKED. He had several learned folks on who gave insight to the cases brought up but he is the ONLY one doing that.
Where are the OTHER SIDE’s talkers? I want to know, too. Thanks for letting me vent
Love your shows………..

July 29th, 2010, 12:27 pmI was so excited for this show and no better than the ladies of The View to sit down with Mr President and have a chat. So great to see Barbra Back also, looking well I might add. I thought it was a wonderful show. I couldn't help but giggle at Sheri she was so 'star stuck' Bless you Sheri you done well.
However when the question was ask about what legacy he would like to leave and he was explaing and talking about the schools and colleges and the next generation and Elizebeth in the background said 'will they have jobs' that was extremely rude and unprofessional. We all know how you feel about Mr Obama but to invite him to your show, boost your rating, and yes keep you in a job you sounded more like a child not getting what she wanted than a professional. Shame on you! This is why people don't trust journalism any more because it is so bias.

July 29th, 2010, 3:13 pmI totally agree Kathy, I cant believe how rude Elisabeth is........holy, you have the President on the show and all she does is try to challenge and has this smirk on her snitty face the whole time. I wish she would have been sick today, then all the other ladies wouldnt be appalled by Elisabeths rude attitude and comments. She is a waste on the show and should move on to other jobs she can act like an unproffessional spoiled brat.

July 29th, 2010, 3:16 pmSounds like they wasted an entire hour w the most powerful male on the planet, talking about vacuous fluff.
I'm really disappointed. I thought this group had more integrity than that.
They didn't even mention GasLand and the supposed poisoning of America by hydraulic fracturing, the single most important issue the media can address, since CLEAN water equals LIFE.
Vacuous, insulting nonsense.
I'm very disappointed. I thought at least Joy had more journalistic integrity than that.
Sad.
