The "N-Word" in 2011: The Co-Hosts Discuss
October 03, 2011 | Posted at 12:22 PM
This morning during Hot Topics, a discussion about a controversial racial slur at one of Rick Perry's properties turned to the general issue of the "N-word" -- what power it has now, who's allowed to say it, and where do we go from here? In typical Hot Topics fashion, the discussion heated up quickly, with Sherri strongly disagreeing with Barbara. Watch the entire debate below, and then tell us what you think in the comments!

October 3rd, 2011, 5:04 pmwow that is something else I see Sherri's point and Elizabeth was trying to make Barbara see with the broccoli analogy. I have taught my children there are words we don't ever use. retarded, the n word and any other racial comment that would hurt someone or anything to belittle anyone and they aren't to jump in with any school mates if there are doing it.

October 3rd, 2011, 5:31 pmIf you don't like having people say the n word, then don't say it yourself. It's like when parents curse and yet they don't want their children to curse. It hurts the parents' feelings when their children develop dirty mouths, but they have themselves to blame. The people who use the word have themselves to blame when others use the word. Too bad it hurts their feelings.

October 3rd, 2011, 6:00 pmI am a white woman and do not have any prejudice against any nationality or color of skin. I was raised in the 60/70's and do remember all the horrific times and prejudice that happened in that period. It was very upsetting to me then and I just wish it could all stop. I felt really bad for Barbara and Sherri at the same time. For Barbara I feel she was very hurt by Sherri's comments and was actually blindsided and didn't see that coming out of a person she felt she knew as a friend. I feel bad for Sherri for having all that negativity standing in her path getting in the way of what should be a very positive happy life. The 1800"s are gone forever our ancestors did horrible acts but we didn't We need to move forward Never forget (so it may never happen to any race again) but find a medium to allow us to grow as a loving peaceful race.
