Martha Stewart's Dog Biscuit Recipe

Martha stopped by with a few of her furry friends and taught us how to make homemade dog biscuits! Here's the recipe:

Ingredients
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup wheat germ
1/4 cup brewer's yeast
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 tablespoons canola oil
1/2 cup low-sodium canned chicken stock, plus more for brushing

Makes about 5 dozen

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, wheat germ, yeast, and salt; set aside

2. Place oil in a large bowl. Add stock and flour mixture in three alternating batches, beginning and ending with stock. Mix well.

3. On a lightly floured work surface, roll out dough to about 3/8-inch thick. Shape biscuits using a dog-bone-shaped cookie cutter or by cutting around a store-bought dog bone with a butter knife.(Make biscuits that are appropriate for your dog's size.)

4. If desired, you can spell out your dog's name or a holiday message in the dough with a toothpick (wet the toothpick first so it won't stick).

5. Transfer to parchment-lined baking sheets. Repeat with remaining dough.

6. Bake biscuits 10 minutes. Brush with stock; rotate baking sheets, and bake 10 minutes more. Turn off oven, leaving door closed. Let dog biscuits stand in oven to dry completely, about 1 1/2 hours. Wrap as a gift, or store in an airtight container at room temperature.

One of my pups has seizures so I cook all of my dog food. I have been wanting a recipe for hard dog biscuits so thanks for this recipe. One word of caution, SALT IS BAD FOR DOGS SO IS GARLIC AND ONION. I would leave out the salt. Because of my dogs seizures I allow him only one protein which is turkey (chicken is okay too) so to add flavor I will add some chicken livers to the mix. I have managed to control his seizures without drugs using my homemade dog food and a herbal powder (Dr. Ackerman's Epilepsy & Seizure Formula). Finn only has one seizure every 4 - 6 months. And Quinn who doesn'thave epilepsy is trim and very fit. The recipe I developed is:

3 ea - 5 pound rolls of ground turkey - cooked
4 large bags of frozen mixed veg (no or very low sodium)
10 cups of cooked millet
10 cups of cooked brown rice
24 eggs scrambled and mashed up small
5 cups of cooked oatmeal
2 cups of raw unsalted sunflower seeds (if I have them)
2 or 3 cups of veg oil
any overripe fruit and veg I have laying around (as long as they are safe for dogs. I don't give them grapes, tomatoes, lettuce or potatoes as they are from the night shade family and not good for dogs. Green beans are in the frozen veg and is okay.
I blend all of these ingreidents up in a huge bucket using a drill and drywall mixer attachment (you can buy one at the hardware store for a few bucks) and then I divide and wrap this in parchment paper and use freezer tape and seal and freeze. This lasts me about a month and a half for two 20 lb dogs who eat 5 ounces twice a day. I give Finn (who has epilepsy) 1 Tbs of Dr. Ackermans Seizure powder in the morning only.
Hope this helps other dog owners who may have issues with Seizures.
Oh, I also buy a bunch of yams (the brightest orange ones) and slice them about 1/2" thick and put them in my food dehydrater. That is the snacks they get. They are substitutions for rawhyde which is dangerous for dogs. I don't feed them wheat products and very little if any dairy.
