September 17, 2010 | Posted at 8:55 AM
Bedbugs have caused quit a stir lately, so Jeff White from BedBug Central dropped by to give us the facts. Discovering bed bugs in your home or suspecting you have them can be stressful. However, this list of dos and don’ts will enable you to make informed choices that will help address your bed bug problem and prevent complicated infestations.
If you find, or suspect you have, bed bugs:
- DO NOT throw out beds, mattresses, or other furniture before consulting an expert; often, these items can be treated. Transportation of these objects throughout the house can spread infestations to new items and create unnecessary expenses. If removal becomes necessary, DO wrap items in tarp prior to removal.
- DO NOT change where you sleep; bed bugs can be transported or will follow, thus complicating infestation. Staying at alternate external locations such as a friend’s house or hotel may spread the infestation there as well.
- DO NOT assume bed bugs are only in your bed. Despite their name, bed bugs inhabit a variety of areas near feeding ground, such as clock radios, headboards, and nightstands.
- DO NOT assume bed bugs only feed at night. While bed bugs typically have higher activity during night hours, the insect can feed whenever a blood-meal is required.
- DO NOT use non-specific bug sprays and chemicals; these are often ineffective with bed bugs and can complicate your bed bug infestation making it more difficult and costly to eliminate the bugs.
- DO NOT assume that if you don’t see bed bugs there is no infestation. Bed bugs can be extremely difficult to detect and may require trained personnel to locate.
- DO frequently inspect your mattress, bedding, headboards, and surrounding areas for small eggs or waste created by bed bugs such as dark spotting or skin molting.
- DO attempt to save any insects that you suspect to be a bed bug.
