E.D. Hill's Bold Decision
February 15, 2010 | Posted at 1:28 PM
In September '09 on The View, conservative journalist E.D. Hill told us about her decision to undergo a preventative double-mastectomy. On Wednesday, she talks with the co-hosts exclusively as she begins this process.
E.D.'s decision was based on her family's history and her fight to avoid breast cancer -- which she made public during her two-day stint as a featured guest co-host of The View (watch here).
Pre-Surgery
In January, we saw Hill at home with her mother and sister, who are both breast cancer survivors (Hill’s grandmother and mother both had breast cancer and her sister has already had a double mastectomy) followed by E.D. live in the studio with her breast cancer doctor. They discussed her upcoming surgery, what people need to know about their family’s genetic history, and how Hill’s children took the news.
Post-Surgery
On Thursday, February 18th, in her second exclusive live interview -- but her first since making the painful decision to undergo surgery for a double mastectomy -- E.D. will again talk to the five hosts of The View, live.
Hill will make one additional appearance on the show in the coming weeks. She is documenting the stages of the surgeries and recovery with a digital video camera exclusively for The View audience and online at abc.com/theview.
It's an eye-opening look at an issue facing women everywhere -- don't miss it.

January 27th, 2010, 8:33 amI am watching this right now & if this truly works - great. HOWEVER, i am sure that healthcare will NOT cover this - so only the wealthy will be able to avoid breast cancer??? Not sure that these types of topics are beneficial to those people who cannot relate to just going otu and having elective surgeries - whether or not it's life saving or looks saving.

January 27th, 2010, 8:35 amE.D. Is crazy!!! There is no guarantee that she will not get breast cancer by having a mastectomy!!! It's absolutely nuts! If you're gonna get cancer and the breast are gone, it will go somewhere else in the body...foolish! The cancer can go to the armpit or other organs! DON’T DO IT! THIS IS NOT THE SOLUTION, IT’S HOW YOU EAT, AND LIFE STYLE!

January 27th, 2010, 8:42 amI'm watching this right now, and while I applaude E.D. Hill for her pro-active stance, she must make sure that her doctors go through the removed tissue extensively. I also had consultations last January for a pro-active mastectomy. I decided to postpone that decision until this year, but found a lump in September that was positive. I ended up having a bi-lateral mastectomy with immediate reconstruction in December, and, unfortunately, will have to undergo Chemotherapy. Incidentally, I am BRCA1 positive, and after my consult last January, had my ovaries removed as well to prevent Ovarian Cancer and reduce my chances of Breast Cancer by 50%. Her doctor's may also consider testing lymph nodes to be sure no BC exists....

January 27th, 2010, 8:42 amAm watching the segment on E.D. Hill. This is MY story! I had double prophylactic (sp?) mastectomies with immediate reconstruction in 2000. It is the best decision I have ever made, regardless of having to fight with the insurance company for a year to get it paid for. Your mother's story is MY mother's story; I did not want to repeat it. I have a female coiusin who also made this decision. You are a courageous woman...proactive and smart!! God Bless you!
