Barbara on Her Phone Call from Rielle
March 15, 2010 | Posted at 11:09 AM
On Monday's show, the View co-hosts discussed the recent interview and photo spread of Rielle Hunter in GQ. Rielle is the videographer who was revealed to be John Edwards's mistress -- and the mother of his child. The interview, complete with racy photographs of Rielle in a men's dress shirt and seemingly nothing else, certainly had the ladies talking. Sherri called the interview and photos "blatantly disrespectful" to Elizabeth Edwards, while Elisabeth objected to the proximity of a bottomless Rielle to plush dolls of Kermit and Dora the Explorer.
VIDEO: Watch Barbara discuss her call with Rielle here.
On a more serious note, though, Barbara talked about the phone call she got from Rielle in reaction to the GQ photos. "She was in tears when she called and said that when she saw the pictures in GQ, she screamed for two hours." Rielle, who had previously met with Barbara last June in preparation for an interview that never transpired, told Barbara she "found the photographs repulsive." Barbara also said, " When I asked if that was the case, why did she pose the way she did -- she said she trusted Mark Seliger, whom she said is a brilliant photographer, and, quote, 'I went with the flow.'"
Barbara also asked about the status of Rielle's relationship with John Edwards. "She said, quote, 'We are co-parents and have a very loving relationship,' but she stressed once more how upset she was with the photographs."
Whatever Rielle's intentions for the GQ piece, Whoopi claimed that she "is with us now. Like foot decay." Whoopi went on to say that it shouldn't be so surprising GQ opted for racy photographs, and that "it's hard to take you seriously when you're sitting there with no pants on."
What were your thoughts on the photo shoot?

March 15th, 2010, 5:27 pmIt's so, so disappointing that the media continues giving space to cheating, disrespectful men and these female vultures. I expected better of Barbra Walters. As a feminist, I held her to high esteem based on her ground-breaking history. Until we stop giving cheaters 15 minutes of fame, they will continue to disrespect the rest of us. John Edwards has shown that he has absolutely no respect for his family, the office he aspired to, or the people who supported him in his political career. Rielle is cheap. Period. What kind of example is she for the young woman she is going to raise? I sure wouldn't want any of my four daughters to see this kind of example and think it's OK. And I do not believe for one second that she didn't understand exactly what she was getting into with GQ. She knew Edwards was married and had a family, but didn't walk away. She has absolutely no respect for herself or she would have never done what she did. They are both disappointing in the least, and despicable at best. Whether Elizabeth Edwards was an overly-ambitious political wife who supported her husband's political aspirations is a moot point. Elizabeth didn't choose to cheat; she chose to support her family. Until we all turn the channel and stop watching these cheap, disrespectful, heathens with absolutely no morals or ethics, the media will continue to show them. But society as a whole is voyeuristic. If it weren't for the rest of The View panel, I would never watch again. I'm so disappointed.

March 15th, 2010, 6:18 pmI felt similar, Dori1333. I could not believe Barbara was defending this woman. What did Ms. Hunter expect when she posed for those pictures? She was modeling for a MEN'S magazine. This women went after a married man (who happened to be a Presidential candidate) with no qualms whatsoever. She calls Ms. Walters and sobs over pictures? For shame, Barbara, for even mentioning this. I smell an interview!!!!!!!!!

March 15th, 2010, 8:29 pmAre you so desperate for ratings Barbara, that you have now stooped to sleazy, paramour home-wreckers, like Rielle Hunter, to champion and have as a guest? This woman showed absolutely no respect for herself, the institution of marriage, the political system, as well as the wife and children of Senator and Mrs. Edwards, as she calculatingly went after Mrs. Edwards' husband, John, like the stalking hooker she is. How dare you even spend a minute with this woman, who took money for sex, there's a name for that, in lieu of an honest days work for an honest paycheck. I am livid with you Barbara. I'm sure if your were married and this woman went after your husband with tawdry tactics, I dare say you wouldn't be interviewing her. Have you absolutely no journalistic integrity or shame left Barbara? Apparently not. This sleazebag wrecks a marriage, along with John's help, and cries about photos she deems are less sleazy than she is? Please. If the blouse fits, wear it! I'm done with watching you or any of your interview shows anymore, Barbara. You've sunk to a new low. Shame on you, Barbara. How insensitive to Mrs. Edwards and her children can you and this woman be? Are you just getting so old that you can't come up with a better guest? I usually don't write comments like that but I am so sick and tired of people with their own shows, stooping to the least common denominater for ratings. Cheap shot Barbara to your loyal fans and every married woman. My heart goes out to Elizabeth. This disgusting woman is talking about the way John was treated during his twenty eight year marriage, that included a loss of a child. What does she know about honor and love and integrity between a husband and wife? This woman is disgusting and has no right or business talking about Elizabeth Edwards, a woman dying of cancer for God's sake. Have you no shame either, Barbara? If John Edwards doesn't stop his tramp from thrashing his wife, he's even worse than this woman whose name I will no longer even use because she is just wasted space, a stain and blight on what and who a real woman is. Shame on you Barbara for your total disregard for Mrs. Edwards feelings, her children's feelings, by giving this low life woman a platform. Are you even the least bit embarrassed or ashamed of yourself or have you become as callous and crass as this woman? Again, apparently. I've said my fill so I am saying goodbye to The View and any and all Barbara Walters interviews.

March 15th, 2010, 8:40 pmThis woman is a blight and stain on womanhood, giving real women a bad name. I think you have stopped to a new low Barbara, by giving this paramour, home-wrecker a platform. I was disgusted by your support for this woman who has never shown an ounce of respect for herself, Mrs. Edwards, Senator and Mrs. Edwards's children, as well as the political system. If John Edwards tolerates this woman speaking out against his wife, he's worse than she is. What can you possibly be thinking of Barbara by even wasting your loyal viewers time with this disgusting woman? Have you lost your moral compass as well Barbara, not to mention the crassness and insensitively shown towards the Edwards children and their mother. Stick a fork in me, I'm done. You reached a new low Barbara and I don't want anything to do with it, even as a viewer.

March 15th, 2010, 10:15 pmWhere has decency gone? Elizabeth Edwards is dying of cancer and this woman poses and discusses her "love" of John Edwards in a major MENs magazine and it is OK. No it is NOT! This is why men believe they have a right to cheat - it's OK with the media who then give their paramours press and TV time. They are supported not only by their peers but by the media (no matter what gender.) We need to start looking at the damage this does to society and what we are telling our children especially our girls. Is it really OK for them to date married men no matter what it will do to their families? Is it the norm for fathers to abandon the established family for someone else? What has happened to promises, trust and loyalty? As a womans show, support of the family and consideration and respect for the family should be a concern - not the latest trash gossip.
